Maarten Stekelenburg’s side comfortably beat Norway in their opening group game but then lost to Scotland on Saturday.

It was crucial for Netherlands to win their final game against Germany to seal top spot in the group and progress to the tournament. However, Germany went into the break ahead after Manuel Wintzheimer netted in the 33rd minute.

Feyenoord midfielder Orkun Kökcü equalised for Netherlands early in the second half and Oranje nearly took the lead through both Donyell Malen and Deroy Duarte.

In the 70th minute, Germany regained their lead as Wintzheimer scored his second of the game and shortly afterwards, Amade added a third. In the final minute, Havertz sealed the comfortable win for the Germans with a penalty.

For the first time since 2014, Netherlands have not qualified for a European U19 Championships. They will now be unable to reach the 2019 U20 World Cup as a result.
