PSV Eindhoven have confirmed that Dries Mertens has officially joined Serie A club Napoli on a five year deal.

mertens cThe Belgian midfielder underwent his medical with Napoli on Saturday, and were only waiting for bank confirmation of the €9.5 million fee before the deal became official. That confirmation came through on Monday night, and the deal was quickly confirmed by both clubs.

Mertens joined PSV from Utrecht in 2011, and has since went on to score 45 goals, and make 45 assists in 88 games for the club. Last season Mertens was the top assist maker in the league with 17.

The 26 year old has 19 caps for the Belgian national side,since making his debut for his country in a friendly match with Finland in 2011, and has gone on to score two goals.

He now becomes new manager Rafael Benitez’s first signing since he took over earlier this summer, and Napoli fans will be in for a treat when they see the hugely talented player in action.

Mertens move to Italy, ends a seven year stay in the Netherlands, with the now non existent AGOVV first bringing him to the country from Gent in 2006.

PSV will now use the money gained in the transfer to fund deals for Adam Maher, Jeffrey Bruma, and a new attacker, but youngster Memphis Depay will act as Mertens replacement on the left wing
