Ajax technical director Marc Overmars has revealed that the club remains in contact with former defenders Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld about a return to Amsterdam.

Ajax have successfully brought Daley Blind and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar back to the Johan Cruyff ArenA over the past two summers and there focus could now switch to Alderweireld and Verthongen.

Both centre-back’s play with Tottenham Hotspur and have ongoing contracts with the Premier League side which makes a return to Ajax unlikely at the moment despite both players stating their hope of moving back to Amsterdam one day.

Speaking to Ajax TV, Marc Overmars stated on the possibility of the duo returning, ‘I always read: Alderweireld wants to go back, Vertonghen wants to go back. But then I would like them to do that when they are fit and hungry for success.

” Whether we have contact with them? That certainly happens, yes. But nothing has been promised. “

Verthongen is currently 31 and has a contract at Spurs until 2020. Alderweireld is two-years younger than his fellow Belgian and also has a contract until 2020.
