van aanholt bThe match got off to a flying start with Vitesse taking the lead after only three minutes with Christian Atsu weaving through three players before sending a rising shot into the top corner.

PEC Zwolle responded after ten minutes as Jesper Drost’s pass found Guyon Fernandez in the box, and the striker found the bottom corner with a nice finish.

On 13 minutes Vitesse were awarded a penalty when Renato Ibarra was tripped in the box, but Lucas Piazon’s low effort was kept out by Diederik Boer.

The rest of the first half failed to live up to the opening 13 minutes with both sides failing to create any real clear cut chances.

PEC Zwolle dominated the second period and should have scored two minutes before the end, but Joost Broerse’s header flew just wide.

From the goal kick Vitesse countered and Patrick van Aanholt found the winning goal with a low finish after a great run from the left back.

Best possible start to the year for Vitesse as they temporarily jump above Ajax to the top, while Zwolle’s will be gutted that their good display ended with nothing.
