Despite having Tomas Necid sent off PEC Zwolle eased to a 2-0 win over Groningen which sees them temporarily up to 4th in the table.

grozwienAfter an excellent start to the season, PEC Zwolle went into the tie against Groningen without a win in their last four matches. However after only five minutes the home side had the lead when Johan Kappelhof headed a Bart van Hintum free kick into his own net.

Goalkeeper Warner Hahn kept PEC Zwolle’s lead intact before the break, firstly making a smart save to deny Danny Hoesen before preventing Jarchinio Antonia, who raced onto a Tjarron Chery through ball.

Just before the hour mark another free kick from Van Hintum reached Trent Sainsbury at the back post, and his header across goal was diverted into the net by Tomas Necid to make it 2-0. The Czech striker was then sent off with fifteen minutes to go for headbutting Antonia who reacted badly to a challenge from behind by Necid.

With the extra man Groningen pushed for a way back into the match, but Michael de Leeuw squandered his side’s only real chance late on, and PEC Zwolle comfortably held on.

The win sees PEC Zwolle climb above Twente, Cambuur, and Heerenveen into fourth, while Groningen sit ninth.
