PEC Zwolle, who were in Europa League action on Thursday, started the game on the back foot, with Vitesse dominating possession and creating chances. Zakaria Labyad, and Valeri Kazaishvili both forced Diederik Boer into early saves, before the away side took a deserved lead on 24 minutes, as Davy Propper’s shot from the edge of the area took a wicked deflection before squirming through Boer’s hands.
After the goal Vitesse continued to dominate possession, while PEC Zwolle were limited to half chances, although Joost Broerse should have better with a half volley, when the ball dropped to him at the back post. Kelvin Leerdam should have made it 2-0 when racing through on goal, but the left back could only bundle the ball wide, while just after half time, he also had a cheeky back-heel cleared off the line.
PEC Zwolle weren’t creating chances but they drew level with 25 minutes to go as Maikel van der Werff’s deflected free kick wrong footed Eloy Room and flew into the bottom corner.
The equaliser lifted the home side, and Jesper Drost nearly headed PEC Zwolle into the lead minutes later, but the ball dropped just wide. Then in the 88th minute, Rene van der Heijden’s sloppy touch let Jody Lukoki steal the ball, and the winger set up Stef Nijland to smash the ball into the roof of the net, which handed Zwolle all three points.
Vitesse now sit 2nd bottom of the Eredivisie, with Ron Jans team still looking for their first three points, while PEC Zwolle’ perfect start to the season continues, and they jump to the top of the table.
