Vitesse Arnhem returned to league action after booking their place in the KNVB Cup final but were on the end of a 3-1 defeat at PEC Zwolle.

Three days after the 2-1 win over Sparta Rotterdam in the cup semi-final, Vitesse started slowly and were behind after ten minutes as Mustafa Saymak found the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Eight minutes later, Michael Tørnes failed to reach a long ball forward and Nicolai Brock-Madsen headed into an empty net to give PEC Zwolle a 2-0 lead.

Early in the second half, Ricky van Wolfswinkel pulled one back from close range after Mickey van der Hart spilt Milot Rashica’s shot. The striker then had an excellent opportunity to level the score but this time his shot was saved by van der Hart.

PEC Zwolle then made sure of the points in the 55th minute thanks to an excellent Danny Holla free-kick which flew into the bottom corner. Van Wolfswinkel was then thwarted by van der Hart as Vitesse failed to make a comeback while at the other end Ryan Thomas hit the woodwork.

The win lifts PEC Zwolle up to 12th while Vitesse are 8th.
