Cambuur started brightly and goalkeeper Warner Hahn had to make a stunning save from Sander van de Streek in the second minute before diving to palm Calvin Mac-Intosch’s long range effort away.
Despite being second best PEC Zwolle took the lead on 25 minutes when Thomas Lam was left totally unmarked in the box to head a corner into the net. Hahn continued to be the busier keeper before the break, making another good save from Bartholomew Ogbeche, while the striker also sent an overhead kick flying over the bar.
Five minutes into the second half the Cambuur defence stood off Ryan Thomas and the winger punished them with a low shot into the bottom corner, and it seemed the holders were cruising into the semi-finals.
However ex-PEC Zwolle winger Furdjel Narsingh led the comeback with two goals in the space of five minutes, firstly running onto Ogbeche’s flick on to fire past Hahn at his near post, before cutting in from the right and finding the left hand corner to equalise.
No team could find a winner before the ninety minutes were up and the match entered extra time, but in the 108th minute Jody Lukoki fired PEC Zwolle into the semi-finals with a nice finish at the back post after a flick on from Jesper Drost.
