NEC held the last play-off spot going into the game, with PEC Zwolle two points behind them in ninth. The hosts knew a win was crucial if they are to make a play for the Europa League and they began the game on top with Ouasim Bouy sending an early effort off target.
On 17 minutes PEC Zwolle opened the scoring in spectacular fashion as Sheraldo Becker took the ball on the right wing, raced towards the box before firing an unstoppable strike into the top corner. Ten minutes later it was 2-0 as Queensy Menig cut in from the left and sent a low deflected effort past Brad Jones.
The visitors were hardly in the game and Janio Bikel and Anthony Limbombe were hooked by coach Ernest Faber on 37 minutes with Mihai-Alexandru Roman and Joey Sleegers coming into the game.
The changes failed to lift NEC after the break and PEC Zwolle came close to adding a third on 50 minutes, but Bouy’s header came back off the woodwork.
PEC Zwolle then held on comfortably to move about NEC into seventh place with only two games to go.
