Karagounis moves to Zwolle from Greek top flight side Atromitos and will meet some familiar faces when AZ and Zwolle meet in March as the striker already faces the Alkmaar side with his former club in Europe this season.
The Lamia born Karagounis scored 8 goals in 96 appearances in all competition for the Greeks. Before his 4 year spell with Atromitos, he spent one season with Fokikos where he kicked off his professional career in 2008.
Karagounis is also capped at international level for his country, representing Greece U19 (7 caps) and U21 (9 caps, scoring 3 goals) but so far he has not been capped for the senior side.
Zwolle will be happy to get some fresh blood in after they somewhat faded away following their blistering start to the season. Having not won a league game since the 6-1 thrashing of ADO Den Haag back in October they would have welcomed the winter break to recharge their batteries and get back to winning ways again in January.
Having been top of the pile after their thunderous start, Jans’s men have ended 2013 in eleventh place.
