Central Coast Mariners announced on Friday that the highly rated defender was leaving for PEC Zwolle with immediate effect, for an undisclosed fee. The 22-year-old is highly regarded as one of the finest young prospects in the A-League, and won Mariners player of the year last season.
Sainsbury has yet to make his international debut for Australia, but is likely to be part of next summers World Cup squad that will face Netherlands in the group stages.
Speaking to the official Mariners site, Sainsbury said, “The Dutch first division is big and now I have to go there and give it my all.”
“I am happy but it’s going to be hard to leave the boys. The players here are like family to me and the fans have always done the right thing by me. I’ve loved my time here.”
