Jaap Stam has made an excellent start since becoming PEC Zwolle boss, winning his two opening games heading into the clash with Utrecht, who had lost their two games of 2019.
After only seven minutes, Utrecht had the lead through Simon Gustafson, who fired an unstoppable strike into the net from distance.
PEC Zwolle went searching for an equaliser and after Younes Namli had hit the bar, Vito van Crooij made it 1-1 on 27 minutes with a header.
Timo Letschert restored Utrecht’s lead just before the hour mark, but the visitors were then reduced to ten men when Urby Emanuelson was shown red for a late challenge.
Despite the disadvantage, Jean-Christophe Bahebeck made it 3-1 with an excellent goal on 75 minutes and that seemed to wrap up a victory for Dick Advocaat’s side.
However, Thomas Lam pulled one back with ten minutes left before PEC Zwolle were awarded a penalty for a foul by Mark van der Maarel on Kingsley Ehizibue. Mike van Duinen netted from the spot to make it 3-3.
Then in the 93rd minute, van Duinen burst into the box before sending a low strike past David Jensen to wrap up a third straight win for PEC Zwolle.
Utrecht stay 6th while PEC Zwolle rise up to tenth.
