After their round one defeat to Atletico Madrid, PSV traveled to Rostov looking to avoid another loss which would all but end their chances of progression. However, Phillip Cocu’s side found themselves behind after only eight minutes with Dmitry Poloz combining well with Erokhin before curling a strike into the top corner. Back came PSV though, with Davy Propper equalising six minutes later via a big deflection.
Rostov restored their lead on 37 minutes with Poloz once again allowed too much space by the PSV defence to net, but in first half stoppage time Luuk de Jong nodded in on the rebound after the ball came back off the post from a Santiago Arias cross to make it 2-2 at the break .
On 58 minutes, PSV were given the perfect opportunity to seal victory with de Jong brought down in the box to earn a penalty. However, Davy Propper, who should have taken the penalty which Andres Guardado missed against Atletico two weeks ago but couldn’t because of a blood injury, saw his poor spot kick saved by the Rostov goalkeeper.
Propper would then go on to hit the bar with a great effort before Steven Bergwijn saw a strike brilliantly saved by Dzhanaev as PSV were forced to settle for a draw. Bayern Munich are the next opponent for Phillip Cocu’s side, with PSV traveling to Germany on the 19th of October.
