Stoke City were relegated from the Premier League after a 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Stoke City went into the game second-bottom and needing at least a point to keep their hopes of survival alive. Erik Pieters was in the starting line-up, but Bruno Martins-Indi was injured and Ibrahim Afellay has been out of the squad for months. Crystal Palace went into the game with Patrick van Aanholt starting, but Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Jairo Riedewald sat on the bench.

Paul Lambert’s side took the lead just before the break as Xherdan Shiqiri found the net but Crystal Palace equalised on 68 minutes through James McArthur. Van Aanholt then sealed Stoke City’s relegation with a strike four minutes from time

The Potters now drop out of the top flight for the first time since 2008. Afellay has been told to look for a new club, while it is now likely that Martins-Indi and Pieters will be looking for new clubs this summer.
