Stoke City left back Erik Pieters says he is surprised to be included in Guus Hiddink’s squad for the friendly against Italy and Euro Qualifier against Czech Republic.

The 26 year old has not been part of the set up for more than a year, earning his last cap in a 2-0 friendly win over China.

“Yeah, I was surprised at least I had not counted on it, after training at Stoke my phone was full of congratulatory text messages. My first reaction? Especially happy to be there again. while it is only the preliminary selection, but it’s a chance for me to show what I’ve got.”
Since moving to the Premier League Pieters has played in 37 league games for Stoke City, scoring one goal against Newcastle United.
