The 22-year-old has struggled since joining Tottenham from AZ Alkmaar in the summer, and has only netted four goals for his new club this season- all from the penalty spot. Janssen has even struggled to make the bench in recent weeks and on Thursday he was left out of the squad again for the Europa League defeat at Gent.
Harry Kane suffered a knock during the defeat and is now set to be rested for the FA Cup trip to Fulham on Sunday. However, Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino will make no guarantee that Janssen will even be involved for the game.
He said on Thursday evening when asked if Janssen will play on Sunday, “Maybe.
“Today he was out of the squad. He needs to show more, and we will see. Maybe he will have the opportunity to be on the bench or play. Today we cannot be sure if he will be on the squad, on the bench or start from the beginning.”
Asked what he meant by “show more”, Pochettino responded, “Performance is always about how the players show their quality, their belief on the training ground. When you select the starting eleven and the bench, I try to be fair. It’s normal that maybe he needs to show more.”
