A double from Quincy Promes helped Eredivisie leaders Ajax ease to a 4-1 victory over Heracles Almelo.

Erik ten Hag with one eye on the clash with Lille in midweek, started Perr Schuurs at centre-back, while Nouassair Mazraoui was once again preferred to Sergino Dest. Zakaria Labyad also started on the wing. Heracles were without Mauro Junior, meaning Sebastian Jakubiak started.

As expected, Ajax dominated from the start but chances for Dusan Tadic and Hakim Ziyech did not result in a goal. Eventually in the 26th minute, Ziyech’s cross was nodded in at the back post by Quincy Promes.

Ajax continued to press and eventually the second goal came in the 56th minute when Daley Blind found Labyad with a long ball and the midfielder poked the ball into the net.

Promes then got his second from another Ziyech cross to make it 3-0 before Dest came off the bench to add a fourth with a low strike from the edge of the box.

In injury time, Dest had the ball robbed on halfway by Cyriel Dessers, who raced in on goal and slotted past Andre Onana to pull one back for the visitors.

The win maintains Ajax’s six point lead at the top of the table, while Heracles remains 8th.
