The first leg’s of the Eredivisie promotion/relegation playoff second round took place on Thursday. Below is a round-up of all the action.

Emmen 4-0 NEC Nijmegen

NEC can forget about a return to the Eredivisie after a disastrous first-leg defeat in Emmen.

NEC went into the playoffs as one of the favourites for promotion but Pepijn Lijnder’s side were torn apart by the hosts in a first-half that ended 3-0. Jeroen Veldmate opened the scoring on three minutes before Nick Bakker made it 2-0 moments later. Five minutes before the break, Youri Loen’s deflected free-kick flew into the net to seal an excellent first half for Emmen.

NEC looked for a way back in the second half, but it failed to materialise and a minute before the end, Glenn Bijl added a fourth.

Emmen head to Nijmegen with a commanding lead on Sunday. The winner would face either Sparta or Dordrecht.

Dordrecht 1-2 Sparta Rotterdam

Robert Muhren netted a last-minute winner as Sparta Rotterdam escaped Dordrecht with a first-leg victory.

Loris Brogno opened the scoring on ten minutes for Sparta Rotterdam and it seemed that was going to be enough for Dick Advocaat’s side. However, a minute before the end, Stijn Spiering’s netted a bizarre own goal to put Dordrecht level.

The host’s joy was short-lived, though, as Robert Muhren scored a last-minute winner to ensure Sparta take a lead into the second leg on Sunday.

Telstar 3-2 De Graafschap

Telstar edged out De Graafschap in a five-goal thriller which ended with both teams down to ten men.

Melvin Platje opened the scoring for a dominant Telstar in the 20th minute. The hosts then missed several chances before Sven Nieuwpoort was shown a red card a minute before the break to reduce De Graafschap to ten men.

Telstar seemed on their way to a comfortable victory when Andrija Novakovic made it 2-0 ten minutes into the second half. However, De Graafschap rallied with Daryl van Mieghem and Fabian Serrarens netted within two minutes of each other to level the score.

Telstar quickly restored their lead through Mo Hamdaoui and they held on for the win despite defender Toine van Huizen being shown a red card late on.

Almere City 0-0 Roda JC

Roda JC came away from Almere City with a draw but it could have been more for the Eredivisie side in the second half.

The home side had the best chances early on with Hidde Jurjus denying Tom Overtoom before Javier Vet hit the bar. Just before the break, Roda JC also hit the crossbar through Simon Gustafson.

After the break, Almere City looked nervous and Roda JC took control. The opening goal didn’t come, though as Jannes Vansteenkiste was denied by the woodwork, while Dani Schahin and Ognjen Gnjatic messed up great chances.

Both sides will be even heading into the second leg on Sunday in Kerkrade.
