The home side pinned Utrecht in their own half from the start, and should have been ahead within the first five minutes when Memphis Depay ran through on goal, but Robbin Ruiter blocked the wingers effort.
Depay, Park ji Sung, Jurgen Locadia, and Luciano Narsingh all missed good opportunities as PSV remarkably failed to take a lead into the half time break.
Finally five minutes into the second half the deadlock was broken as Jurgen Locadia tapped into an empty net after Ruiter and Narsingh collided in the box.
Utrecht began to attack after falling behind, and they should have been awarded a penalty when Yassine Ayoub directed Jens Toornstra’s free kick against the arm of Jeffrey Bruma.
Coming into the last five minutes Locadia, and Adam Maher both missed simple chances to kill the game off, but luckily for PSV it didn’t matter as they held on for the narrow win.
The three points lifts PSV above Feyenoord, who play on Sunday, and into fourth place, which holds the final automatic Europa League spot. Utrecht remain in danger, with only four points separating them from the bottom three.
A great streak in Eindhoven, but the Vitesse game will be the true test of the improvement over the last few weeks.
