Siem de Jong’s 4th goal in three games was enough to earn PSV Eindhoven a 1-0 win over Vitesse.

Phillip Cocu decided to bring Marco van Ginkel back into the starting line-up for Bart Ramselaar as Siem de Jong kept his place on the left wing, while Jetro Willems was replaced by Joshua Brenet.

Without pace on the left wing, PSV struggled in the first half to create chances and Vitesse comfortably dealt with an isolated Luuk de Jong. The Vitesse attack had more pace to it but they were restricted to shots from range with Navarone Foor and Ricky van Wolfswinkel both sending efforts wide.

However, five minutes into the second half PSV took the lead, with Siem de Jong firing the ball into the top corner from the edge of the box after being picked out by Andres Guardado.

Jurgen Locadia then came off the bench and he nearly made it 2-0 with a ferocious strike from distance on 76 minutes, but the ball came back off the post. Moments later Eloy Room denied Siem de Jong a second with a fingertip save.

With five minutes left van Ginkel was played through on goal but despite having his shirt pulled by Guram Kashia the midfielder got his shot away which Room saved and then got up to clear off the line. Van Ginkel appealed for a penalty but Kevin Blom waved his protest away.

The home sides misses didn’t matter in the end as Vitesse failed to come close to an equaliser and PSV held on for a win. They move to within a point of Ajax in second, while Vitesse stay 6th.
