Before the international break, PSV failed to break down a stubborn Groningen defence in a 0-0 draw but they found their way through NEC’s wayward back four with ease and found themselves up 4-0 by the 24th minute.
Bart Ramselaar was handed his first start by Phillip Cocu and the midfielder opened the scoring with a fierce shot from outside the box after latching onto a through ball. Six minutes later Gaston Pereiro slotted in from Luuk de Jong’s cross to make it 2-0 before Joshua Brenet headed in a third moments later. The first half rout was completed by De Jong who raced onto Davy Propper’s perfect pass before lifting the ball over the NEC keeper and into the net.
With the damage done, PSV slowed down in the second half and although they created chances no more goals came. The win moves PSV top before Feyenoord play on Sunday while NEC are 12th.
Next up for the Eindhoven side is Atletico Madrid who visit the Philips Stadion on Tuesday.
