Two goals in the final minute sealed PSV Eindhoven a 4-3 win over Heerenveen and kept their title hopes alive.

The pressure was on PSV to record a victory with Ajax and leaders Feyenoord already recording 1-0 wins over the weekend. However, after only five minutes Heerenveen took the lead with Sam Larsson scooping the ball over the PSV defence for Reza Ghoochannejhad, who chipped it over the onrushing Jeroen Zoet.

PSV nearly equalised straight away when the ball fell at Gaston Pereiro’s feet in the penalty box but the Uruguayan’s shot was cleared off the line by Doke Schmidt. The hosts then laid siege to the Heerenveen box with Daniel Schwaab hitting the bar with a header, while Pereiro fired over the bar from close range.

Eventually, on 32 minutes, the pressure resulted in an equaliser with Davy Propper beating Erwin Mulder to a long ball to loop a header into an empty net. Eight minutes later PSV had the lead as Luuk de Jong headed Jetro Willem’s cross back towards goal for Pereiro to nod over the line.

PSV continued to dominate in the early stages of the second half but out of nowhere on 54 minutes Heerenveen equalised. Arber Zeneli’s pass deflected into the path of Reza in the box and the striker fired an excellent strike past Zoet from a tight angle.

Martin Odegaard then came off the bench for Heerenveen as they went in search for the lead but it was PSV who continued to create and miss chances. On 75 minutes they were given the perfect chance to regain their lead when De Jong was awarded a penalty for a trip by Schmidt. However, Pereiro’s poor spot kick was kept out by Mulder.

Heerenveen then went down the other end and from a corner Reza took advantage of poor defending to head in and seal his hat-trick which put his side 3-2 up.

Jurgen Streppel’s side looked like they were going to hold on for an unlikely win but in the 88th minute, Marco van Ginkel slid in an equaliser from close range. Less than a minute later PSV sensationally turned the game around with Hector Moreno diverting a free kick into the net to make it 4-3.

The win keeps PSV in third and eight minutes behind leaders Feyenoord. Heerenveen sit fourth.
