PSV defeated Sporting in their first group game and headed to Norway full of confidence. Mark van Bommel named Ritsu Doan in the starting eleven ahead of Bruma, while Jeroen Zoet was forced out in the warm-up, meaning Robbin Ruiter started.
After fifteen minutes, PSV had the lead thanks to Pablo Rosario, who scored his third goal in three games with a strike from the edge of the box which found the net via a defender and the bar.
In the 37th minute it was 2-0 thanks to an own goal by Birger Meling, who worked a poor Denzel Dumfries strike into his own net. Four minutes later, in-form striker Donyell Malen kept his cool after an error in the home side’s defence to make it 3-0.
PSV remained on top in the second half but in the 70th minute, Rosenborg pulled one back. Ruiter made a good save but he could not prevent Samuel Adegbenro from netting on the rebound.
The goal did not start signs of a comeback and PSV quickly added their fourth in the 78th minute as Malen scored again after being fed by Doan.
PSV move onto six points and three ahead of Rosenborg and Sporting, who defeated LASK Linz in the group’s other game.
Superb week for Dutch football, 10 points out of 12 in Europe! PSV was the most convincing side today, and already look in pole position to reach the knockout stages. Here’s hoping they can make a run, they certainly have enough talent in attacking positions to do so!
