PSV Eindhoven have started their Eredivisie campaign with a 3-2 win over AZ Alkmaar.

After their shock Europa League exit to Osijek, PSV looked to start their league campaign with a much-needed win but it was AZ who began brightly with young winger Calvin Stengs looking lively. However, after a nasty clash with Arias, Stengs was forced off the field with a nasty looking injury.

The injury didn’t stop AZ from coming forward and substitute Dabney Dos Santos opened the scoring with a strike into the bottom corner on 18 minutes. The goal woke PSV up and eventually they began to create some chances through Steven Bergwijn and Hirving Lozano. On 31 minutes, Lozano equalised after cutting in from the left before firing into the bottom corner.

The Mexican winger then missed two great chances, firstly seeing a shot cleared off the line before smashing the bar when through on goal. At the other end AZ remained dangerous with Alireza Jahanbakhsh also striking the woodwork with a fabulous strike.

Three minutes into the second half PSV took the lead with Gaston Pereiro bursting into the box and firing a strike through Marco Bizot, who should have kept the shot out. AZ should have hit back straight away but after being played on goal by Dos Santos, Wout Weghorst lashed the ball high and wide.

PSV sat back and invited pressure from AZ but in the 75th minute Jorrit Hendrix picked out Pereiro with an excellent cross and after the Uruguayan’s header was kept out by Bizot, van Ginkel fired in the rebound to make it 3-1. Moments after the goal, AZ went down the other end and van Ginkel bundled over Jahanbakhsh in the box to earn AZ a penalty which Weghorst converted.

AZ pushed for a late equaliser but PSV held on to earn all three points.
