The home side got off to the perfect start on three minutes, with Jetro Willems firing into the bottom corner from just outside the box to give PSV a 1-0 lead.
Both goalkeepers were called into action as the first half drew on, with Jeroen Zoet having to make smart saves from Roy Beerens, and Johann Gudmundsson. At the other end Alvarado made a brilliant stop to deny Park ji Sung’s shot which looked destined for the top corner.
At the start of the second half Adam Maher came within inches of netting against his former side, but his low effort was just tipped around the post by Alvarado.
With six minutes left Santiago Arias saved PSV by clearing Fernando Lewis’s shot off the line after a scramble in the box.
PSV held on in the final minutes to gain a crucial three points, which sees them rise to 6th in the table, while AZ drop to 8th.
