Luuk de Jong netted a hattrick as PSV Eindhoven hammered 10-man Fortuna Sittard 5-0. However, the victory was marred by an injury to Steven Bergwijn.

With Hirving Lozano out injured, Mark van Bommel opted for Donyell Malen on the left wing. The youngster caused controversy after 12 minutes when he slid two footed into the back of Mark Diemers, but only saw a yellow card.

By that point, PSV were already 1-0 up with Gaston Pereiro curling the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

PSV controlled possession but they failed to make it 2-0 before the break despite Fortuna going down to ten men on the half-hour mark. Clint Essers was shown a second yellow card for a handball.

At the break, Van Bommel decided to switch Malen, who was risking a second yellow card, and bring on Cody Gakpo.

The 19-year-old substitute made a great impact with his cross on 54 minutes headed into the net by Luuk de Jong to make it 2-0. It was De Jong’s 100th goal for the Eindhoven club. Two minutes later it was 3-0 with Gakpo finding the top corner with an excellent strike from outside the box.

Just after the hour mark, PSV were dealt a major blow with Bergwijn going down with a serious injury and he had to be replaced by 16-year-old Mohammed Ihattaren. The winger is on his way to the hospital with a suspected broken leg.

De Jong made it 4-0 after a lovely team move on 75 minutes and late on he completed his hattrick with a close range header.

The victory keeps PSV five points above Ajax while Fortuna Sittard are 10th. Van Bommel will now be waiting for the news on Bergwijn.
