PSV Eindhoven has climbed to second in the Eredivisie after a 2-1 victory over Utrecht.

PSV went into the game looking to take advantage of Vitesse Arnhem’s failure to defeat Heerenveen.

After an unconvincing start, PSV took the lead after half-an-hour with Donyell Malen finishing after being set up by Mario Gotze. Minutes later, Mohamed Ihattaren doubled the lead with a lovely curled effort into the top corner from outside the box.

It was Ihattaren’s first goal of the season and he celebrated by hugging head coach Roger Schmidt. The coach has paid special attention to the talented midfielder since becoming PSV boss.

Utrecht came back in the second half, and after Gyrano Kerk had had a goal ruled out for offside, Mimoun Mahi did pull one back. The forward pounced on poor defending to net in the 72nd minute.

Belgian youngster Yorbe Vertessen came on for his PSV debut but he could not finish two big chances to kill the game. At the other end, Pablo Rosario made a crucial block to deny Utrecht an equaliser.

PSV go second in the table while Utrecht are 10th.
