PSV have been guilty of failing to take their chances on numerous occasions this season, the defeats against Feyenoord and Atletico Madrid come to mind, along with the draw in Russia midweek. Once again on Saturday it was a frustrating night for Phillip Cocu as his side failed to down Heerenveen and had to settle for a point.
In the first half both Luuk de Jong and Gaston Pereiro missed guilt edged chances, with the former also hitting the woodwork as both sides went into the break level. Early in the second half Steven Bergwijn also should have scored but when racing through on goal he slipped the ball wide of the post.
Heerenveen barely threatened but in the 72nd minutes, Luciano Slagveer got free of the PSV defence and his cross was turned in at the back post by Arber Zeneli. However, the lead only lasted for three minutes before Gaston Pereiro jinked into the box and saw his cross turned into his own net by Jerry St Juste.
PSV pushed for a late winner and they were awarded a indirect free kick in the six yard box after a backpass, but Siem de Jong’s strike was deflected over the bar by Schwaab and Heerenveen held out to take a point.
PSV now sit three points behind Feyenoord in second, but the Rotterdam club can move further clear on Sunday. Heerenveen are fourth.
