On paper, the result in Eindhoven seemed a no brainer with PSV winning all of their league matches so far, while Groningen had lost all theirs. However, PSV started sloppily and barely threatened an opening goal in the first half hour.
Groningen defended resolutely, but they were reduced to ten men when Juninho Bacuna saw red for his second yellow card and before the break they handed PSV the perfect opportunity to take the lead when Hans Hateboer took out Luciano Narsingh in the box. Luuk de Jong stepped up to take the penalty, but his weak effort was saved by Sergio Padt, making it two missed spot kicks already this season for the striker.
PSV laid siege to the Groningen goal in the second half but a combination of poor finishing and good goalkeeping from Padt kept the scores level. Not even the late introduction of Bart Ramselaar could inspire the home side as Groningen held on for an unlikely point.
PSV remain second in the table but slide two points behind Feyenoord, while Groningen move off the bottom on goal difference.
