The annual curtain raiser for the Dutch football season was dominated by the Eredivisie champions from the start as they camped in the Feyenoord half. Andres Guardado went close first with a free-kick that cannoned off the bar, and the rebound was headed over the by Luuk de Jong.
Just before the half-hour mark PSV were awarded a soft penalty when Jorrit Hendrix was brought down by Karim El Ahmadi, but De Jong blasted the spot kick over the bar. Ten Minutes later PSV finally found the net with Davy Propper scuffing a low strike into the bottom corner from just inside the box after De Jong’s knock-down.
Jurgen Locadia curled a shot just wide as the second half started like the first, but gradually Feyenoord grew into the game and Eric Botteghin came close to an equaliser with a header that was cleared off the line by Andres Guardado. Nicolai Jorgensen then fired a shot over the bar from inside the box as Feyenoord pushed for a late equaliser.
However, PSV held on and were presented with their 11th Johan Cruijff Schaal. The perfect start to the season for Phillip Cocu, who’s side start their campaign for a third straight Eredivisie title next week.
2 different games in each half. PSV was great in the 1st and Feyenoord was great in the second. I rarely rag on the refs, but they really sucked today. The penalty called on El Ahmadi was pure BS, the lack of a red card to Williams after he attacked Toornstra was even worse. PSV is a good enough team as it is, they don’t need help. Feyenoord was taking on 2 teams today: PSV and the refs.
Johan Cruijff or Johan Cruyff?
