Ajax’s draw with Twente meant PSV went into the tie knowing a win would leave them 10 points ahead of their rivals ahead of their meeting next weekend. Phillip Cocu decided to switch up his line-up with Steven Bergwijn coming in for Luuk de Jong.
PSV started brightly but Goalkeeper Roy Kortsmit saved from Gaston Pereiro and Jurgen Locadia, before Bergwijn, Jorrit Hendrix and Hirving Lozano all missed good chances as the teams went into the break level.
Cocu decided to bring on De Jong at the break and seven minutes after halftime the strike broke the deadlock, converting a Joshua Brenet cross.
Pereiro and Marco van Ginkel came close to making it 2-0 but were both denied by Kortsmit while De Jong hit the bar. PSV failed to net the decisive second, but Sparta didn’t prove much threat towards the end and the hosts held on.
The win means PSV are eight points clear of AZ in second but more importantly opened up the gap on Ajax. Sparta drop to 16th.
