Feyenoord’s slip up against PEC Zwolle gave PSV the chance to extend their lead at the top and Phillip Cocu brought Luuk de Jong back into the starting line-up in place of the injured Hirving Lozano.
VVV had goalkeeper Lars Unnerstall to thank for keeping it goalless in the opening twenty minutes, but he was eventually beaten by Jurgen Locadia, who finished well after a nice combination with de Jong.
PSV were denied a penalty when it appeared Moreno Rutten handled in the box and they were left furious when Danny Makkelie pointed to the spot at the other end when Nicolas Isimat-Mirin held Torino Hunte. Clint Leemans made no mistake to net the equaliser against his former club.
Three minutes into the second half, VVV stunned PSV by taking the lead through Hunte, who netted from close range after a Vito van Crooij cross. However, the lead didn’t last long before Gaston Pereiro equalised with a lovely strike into the bottom corner after skipping past three VVV defenders.
Three minutes after the equaliser, VVV were reduced to ten men when Jerold Promes was shown a straight red card for a horrible challenge on Santiago Arias. PSV took full advantage of the extra man, with Daniel Schwaab heading in from close range to make it 3-2 before debutante Mauro Junior slammed in on the rebound to make it 4-2 on 72 minutes.
Five minutes before the end, Pereiro nodded in his second of the game to seal a big win for PSV and they now sit five points clear of both Ajax and Feyenoord. VVV sit 9th.
