Last weekend PSV’s poor concentration once again cost them points as they were held to a 1-1 draw by struggling Roda JC, but it seemed the defending champions were on for a simple win when they steamed into a 2-0 lead on Saturday.
After only seven minutes Jurgen Locadia found an unmarked Gaston Pereiro at the back post and the midfielder had a simple tap-in. Seven minutes later it was 2-0 with Pereiro brilliantly spinning his marker on the edge of the box before slotting in his second.
The home side were comfortable and relaxed, but five minutes before the break that changed with Hector Moreno punished for handling in the box and Bram van Polen beat Jeroen Zoet from the spot. The visitors then smelled blood and a long ball over the top was finished emphatically by Lars Veldwijk to stun the Philips Stadion and send the sides into half time level.
PSV’s fans would have been fearing the worst in the second half as they struggled to break down PEC Zwolle, but eventually with 25 minutes to go they found the winner. The returning Maxim Lestienne, who missed a month after the death of his parents, perfectly found Luuk de Jong in the box, and the Eredivisie’s top scorer headed powerfully into the net.
PEC Zwolle caused PSV problems before the end but Phillip Cocu’s side held on to claim the three points and head into the winter break on a high. PEC Zwolle remain 8th.
