In a rearranged fixture, PSV Eindhoven defeated Groningen 3-1 in the Philips Stadion.

The game was originally planned for the 24th of August but was pushed back due to PSV’s involvement in Europe. For the tie, Mark van Bommel elected to rest Mohamed Ihattaren with Ritsu Doan making his first start for the club against his former side. Bruma, Timo Baumgartl and Michal Sadilek also started on the bench.

PSV dominated possession from the start and eventually they took the lead in the 12th minute with Pablo Rosario finding the net with a fierce strike from outside the box.

PSV then doubled their lead in the 38th minute with a fine team move that started with Jeroen Zoet and ended with Donyell Malen setting up Denzel Dumfries to fire past Sergio Padt.

In the 70th minute, Groningen pulled a goal back in fortunate circumstances as Ramon-Pascal Lundqvist’s strike went through the legs of the unlucky Olivier Boscagli before beating Zoet.

PSV were never really in danger of conceding an equaliser and before the end Bruma removed any doubt with a third for the home side.

PSV remains second in the table on goal difference too Ajax. Groningen are 14th.
