A wasteful PSV Eindhoven had to come from behind to defeat De Graafschap 2-1 which keeps them level on points with leaders Ajax.

With goal difference possibly the deciding factor in the Eredivisie title race this season, PSV will have seen the clash with De Graafschap as a chance to close the gap on Ajax.

However, the home side made a slow start and only became dangerous in the 15th minute when Hirving Lozano raced in on goal but his strike hit the post and went wide.

In the 20th minute, Luuk de Jong found himself with space in the box but his finish was wild and into the side netting.

PSV were probing for the opener but in the 26th minute, Pablo Rosario lost the ball and Leeroy Owusu swung in a cross for Delano Burgzorg to head the visitors in front.

An equaliser was almost netted immediately but Denzel Dumfries strike was tipped onto the bar. Bergwijn then scuffed a shot wide before de Jong was off target with a free header.

De Graafschap came close to a second five minutes before the break but Serrarens could only fire wide when played in on goal. PSV went down the other end and Lozano was set up with an open goal but his strike went past the post. With the last chance of the first-half, Lozano had the ball in the net finally but it was disallowed for offside in the build-up.

Mark van Bommel decided to bring on Donyell Malen for the second half with Mohammed Ihattaren taken off. However, the opening of the second period was much like the first with PSV creating plenty of chances without finding the net. Rosario put a shot wide from the edge of the area while De Jong’s strike from point-blank range was straight at Nigel Bertrams.

In the 63rd minute, PSV were awarded a penalty for a foul on Lozano, Bergwijn confidently slotted in the spot-kick to finally make it 1-1.

Ten minutes later, PSV had the lead as Dumfries burst through on the right before crossing to De Jong, who slid the ball past Bertrams.

PSV failed to kill the game and with a minute left, De Graafschap almost equalised but Jeroen Zoet was aware to tip Daniel Schwaab’s attempted clearance over the bar.

PSV remain level with Ajax but have a much inferior goal difference. De Graafschap are 16th.
