schwaab psvThe 27-year-old left the Bundesliga side on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract and is likely to be a replacement for the outgoing defender Jeffrey Bruma, who joined Wolfsburg last month.

As a youngster, Schwaab represented Germany’s under 18s, 19s and 21s but has yet to make an appearance for the senior side. Throughout his career the defender has racked up over 180 Bundesliga appearances for Freiburg, Bayer Leverkusen and Stuttgart plus he has experience playing in both the Champions League and Europa League.

Another positive for Phillip Cocu will be Schwaab’s versatility, as not only is the German adept at centre-back, he has also played regular games at right-back and in defensive midfield.

In an interview with PSV TV Schwaab pointed out that technical director Marcel Brands had a big role in his transfer to the Netherlands. “I was here two weeks ago for the first time and had a huge chat with Marcel Brands. He has fully convinced me to come play here. He explained to me how PSV want to play and that is in a manner I would like. Therefore I have made this step.”

After the arrival of this free transfer, rumours will now be quashed over the possible transfer of Zenit defender Nicolas Lombaerts to PSV.
