Depay was forced off the pitch during Saturday’s 3-1 defeat to PEC Zwolle and after undergoing an MRI scan on Monday the winger is believed to have torn a muscle in his groin.
The expected recovery time for this type of injury is 6-8 weeks, although club doctor Rolf Timmermans stressed that the club would not rush the 20-year-old back.
Timmermans told De Telegraaf, “As a rule a recovery from this injury is usually 6 to 8 weeks. But each player responds differently to treatment. Each player recovers differently. So we have to wait and see. Depay is an explosive player so that can have consequences when you let him play again.”
Depay is set to miss PSV Eindhoven’s Europa League ties against Estoril and Dinamo Moscow along with Netherlands next two European Championship qualifiers versus Iceland and Kazakhstan. His absence will be a huge blow for PSV with the youngster already scoring five times in five league matches.
