Schaars, 30, underwent surgery in the United States earlier this year and subsequently made two appearances for the PSV reserve side during November before a problem surfaced with the meniscus of his left knee to again force him onto the sidelines.
“Stijn Schaars is expected to be out a few months,” read an official statement.
“Because the complaints to his left knee have not improved sufficiently with rest and customised training, we held an exploratory operation whereby a meniscus problem came to light.
“The keyhole surgery took place last Tuesday, after a period of rest and adequate training.
“Earlier this year, Schaars had an operation in the United States because he had been struggling with problems to his knee.”
Phillip Cocu’s men are enjoying a fine campaign in Schaars’ absence thus far, as they currently hold a one-point advantage over rivals Ajax in the Eredivisie standings and have also qualified for the knockout stages of the Europa League.
