PSV Eindhoven will top the Eredivisie heading into the winter break after they came from behind to beat AZ Alkmaar 3-1.

Mark van Bommel was forced into changes for the clash with Nicolas Isimat-Mirin coming in for the injured Daniel Schwaab, while Gaston Pereiro replaced the suspended Pablo Rosario.

PSV began the game poorly and it was no surprise when AZ Alkmaar claimed the lead in the fifteenth minute. Mats Seuntjens started the visitors on a counter and when given space he fired a strike past Jeroen Zoet.

Oussama Idrissi and Fredrik Midtsjø then went close to doubling the visitors lead before Van Bommel took action. Just before the half-hour mark, a furious Pereiro was hooked for youngster Michal Sadilek. However, the change worked and PSV equalised before the break through Steven Bergwijn.

A few minutes into the second half, PSV had the lead when Bergwijn’s counter ended with Luuk de Jong setting up Sadilek to slide past Marco Bizot.

AZ remained dangerous and Guus Til missed a great chance after being set up by Calvin Stengs before Midtsjø hit the post. In the 83rd minute, Denzel Dumfries was brought to the ground by Ron Vlaar, and Hirving Lozano settled the game from the penalty spot.

The victory means PSV head into the winter break at least two points above Ajax, while AZ are down in 7th.
