PSV Eindhoven’s title chances are in tatters after they were held to a 2-2 draw by ADO Den Haag.

Much of the discussion before the game started centred around Mohamed Ihattaren, who was dropped to the bench. Roger Schmidt was criticised for substituting the midfielder in the midweek cup game and decided to start with Yorbe Vertessen instead of the 19-year-old against ADO Den Haag. Schmidt stated it was because Ihattaren needs rest.

PSV poured forward from the start but Donyell Malen was off-target with a great chance, while Martin Fraisl denied Eran Zahavi. In the 20th minute, PSV were awarded a penalty for a foul by Bobby Adekanye but Philipp Max fired his spot-kick high and wide.

ADO then went on a rare attack in the 27th minute and after bursting into the box, Adekanye fired past Yvon Mvogo. It was the on loan forward’s first goal in the Eredivisie.

PSV went in search of the equaliser before the break but Ryan Thomas was off-target before Fraisl made an excellent save to deny Zahavi.

Five minutes into the second half, PSV did finally score with Malen bursting into the box before finding the net with a low strike.

On the hour mark, Ihattaren came on for Vertessen and he almost made an immediate impact but Fraisl parried his curling strike away. The ADO stopper then produced another two great stops to prevent Malen and then Ihattaren again.

In the 76th minute, PSV had the lead with an attempted clearance by Jamal Amofa setting up Malen to fire past Fraisl from close range. Malen almost completed his hat-trick moments later but his lovely lob came back off the crossbar.

Malen hit the crossbar again as PSV failed to kill the game, and in the 93rd minute, ADO Den Haag made them pay. A long ball forward wasn’t dealt with and Michiel Kramer found the net with an overhead kick.

PSV had a minute to find the winner and they almost did but ADO Den Haag cleared an effort off the line.

PSV are second and three points behind Ajax, who have two games in hand. ADO Den Haag are 17th.
