The first half was a drab affair with neither side able to create any chances of note, and Nick Marsman only needed to make one save in the Twente goal to prevent Nadirov in the 40th minute. At the other end, new signings Hakim Ziyech, and Kamohelo Mokotjo were linking up well in midfield, but neither could create chances for Luc Castaignos up front.
Ten minutes into the second half Twente created their best chance of the game, with defender Rasmus Bengtsson seeing his header cleared off the line by a Qarabag defender. Ziyech also came close to opening the scoring for Twente, but his shot was well saved by the opposition goalkeeper.
Twente will be happy with their performance, and with the second leg in Enschede next week, Alfred Schreuder’s side will be confident of progressing to the Europa League group stages.
