Arjen Robben was still missing for Bayern Munich but they didn’t need the winger in a slender victory which moved them level on points with leaders Borussia Dortmund.
Hertha were the better side in the first half but couldn’t find the net and in the second half, Javi Martinez netted for Bayern.
That proved to be the only goal but six minutes from time, Dutch international Karim Rekik saw red for an altercation with Robert Lewandowski.
Elsewhere, Wout Weghorst’s Wolfsburg hammered Borussia Monchengladbach 3-0, while Jean-Paul Boetius got the better of Jeffrey Bruma as Mainz beat Schalke 3-0.
