Fernando Ricksen passed away on Wednesday morning after a lengthy battle with Motor Neuron Disease.

The former midfielder confirmed in October 2013 that he was suffering from Motor Neuron Disease, which left him bed ridden in a hospice and needing a speech computer to communicate.

On Wednesday, Ricksen’s family confirmed that the 43-year-old had passed away. Our thoughts are wife his wife, child and family at this sad time.

Ricksen represented Fortuna Sittard, AZ, Rangers and Zenit Saint Petersburg during his playing career, and he also earned 12 caps for the Dutch national team.
