After the 0-0 draw in Waalwijk there was all to play for in the second leg but nobody could have predicted such a crazy affair in Deventer.
RKC got off to a great start with Emil Hansson netting from the penalty spot in the 13th minute after Stijn Spierings was brought down. In the 38th minute it was 2-0 as Spierings capitalised on an error from Jeroen Veldmate before smashing the ball into the net.
On the stroke of half-time, the hosts were awarded a spot-kick and Veldmate made up for his error by scoring the penalty.
Ten minutes into the second half, Go Ahead were level through Richard van der Venne and shortly afterwards they had the lead. Istvan Bakx fired the home crowd into euphoria and it could have been even better but Van der Venne hit the bar.
RKC did not give up though and Hans Mulder put them back level with ten minutes to go and at that point they were heading up on away goals. However, in the 89th minute, Go Ahead Eagles seemed to have snatched victory as Pieter Langedijk’s strike flew into the far corner.
In the 5th minute of stoppage time, Spierings was the hero for RKC as he curled a great strike into the top corner. Seconds later, a penalty was awarded to the visitors and Mario Bilante scored it to seal a 5-4 win and RKC’s place back in the Eredivisie.
For the first time since 2014, RKC are back in the top flight.
