Groningen dominated but had to wait until the 31st minute to take the lead with Michael de Leeuw finishing at the front post after a brilliant run down the right by debutant Hans Hateboer.
Hateboer was enjoying a good debut until he was shown a straight red card with 20 minutes left for what the referee deemed a reckless challenge on RKC left back Remy Amieux. However replays showed the right back got the ball in a good challenge.
With the extra man RKC domintated the last period, and were awarded a penalty with eight minutes to go when Kieftenbeld handled in the box. Evander Sno stepped up and made no mistake from the spot to claim a point for his side.
Groningen will feel annoyed after such a dominant display that they conceded such a needless penalty, which in the end cost them the three points.
The point sees Groningen remain 6th, while RKC sit just above the relegation places in 14th.
