The home side got off to the perfect start with Romeo Castelen finding the net after only eight minutes with a half volley from outside the box which flew over Robbin Ruiters head.
Utrecht were awarded a penalty two minutes later after a handball in the box, and Jens Toornstra made no mistake to make it 1-1.
The game seemed to be limping towards a 1-1 draw until a crazy last 10 minutes, where firstly Daniel De Ridder made it 2-1, firing past Ruiter from 25 yards. Kenny Anderson made it 3-1 two minutes later, before Steve De Ridder pulled a goal back on 83 minutes.
Another penalty was then awarded to Utrecht, but Toornstra hit the post from the spot. The midfielder then accidentally set up Jean David Beauguel to make it 4-2 to RKC, as his attempted tackle ended up in the forwards path.
In the last minute of injury time Aurelien Joachim ran onto de Ridders path before rounding Ruiter and slotting into the empty net to make it 5-2.
The win moves RKC into 13th, while Utrecht sit a place below them, and with no win in six league games, the club are now dropping into the relegation battle.
