Robben’s return to the Eredivisie has not gone as planned with the 36-year-old only making two short appearances for Groningen.
The winger returned to training last week as it appeared he was close to playing again. However, Robben has now ruled himself out until next year.
He told the club’s website, “Things are not going the way I would like.
“We have worked hard in recent months, but unfortunately without the desired result. I will use the coming time to recover and would really like to be on the field with the team in the new year and play matches. Whether this will work, I cannot say yet. That will show in the coming period.
“Although my own situation is disappointing, I am happy that our team is doing so well. The performance and the game are fine and I even think we could have had a few more points. That is only positive for the rest of this season.”
Robben will miss at least the next five Groningen matches and could be targeting a return after the winter break.
