Roda JC have taken a big step towards safety with a win over relegation rivals Sparta Rotterdam in Kerkrade.

The home side went into the game one point behind Sparta Rotterdam and knew anything but a win would be damaging in their pursuit of safety.

Roda JC began the brighter of the two sides and they took the lead on 14 minutes through an Abdul Ajagun header. The lead was nearly extended before the break but Tom van Hyfte was unlucky to see his ferocious strike come crashing down off the bar.

Sparta Rotterdam had a lot of possession but couldn’t turn that into any clear-cut chances and on the hour mark, Ajagun took advantage of a poor defensive clearance to net his and Roda JC’s second of the night.

Thomas Verhaar gave Sparta hope of a comeback when he netted with twelve minutes to go, but just before injury time, Mikhail Rosheuvel tapped in a third for Roda to seal the victory.

The win lifts Roda JC out of the bottom two and into 14th place. Sparta Rotterdam drop into the bottom three.
