Heerenveen had the lead on 26 minutes, when Magnus Wolff Eikrem cut inside on the left, and fired low into the net, through the goalkeeper.
The lead only lasted seven minutes, with Mitchell Donald getting in front of his marker to stab home a cross from the right to make it 2-1.
Roda JC then took the lead on the hour mark, as Krisztian Nemeth narrowly beat the offside trap before calmly beating the goalkeeper, with a good finish.
However once again a lead did not last long, and only two minutes later, goal machine Alfred Finnbogason made it 2-2, as the Icelandic forward beat three men before finding the bottom corner with a great finish.
The goals kept coming, and on 70 minutes, Heerenveen took the lead, with Joey van den Berg finishing well, after some terrible defending to make it 3-2.
The impressive Guus Hupperts was sent free on the right hand side on 70 minutes, and the winger finished cooly to equalise at 3-3, with four goals coming in 10 minutes.
Yanic Wildschut should have won it for Heerenveen late on, but he was denied by not only the goalkeeper, but also the crossbar, as both teams settled for a point.
