Roda JC have boosted their chances of escaping the bottom three after a shock 3-0 win at Vitesse Arnhem.

Without the unfit Tim Matavz, who was on the bench, Henk Fraser had to go with Luc Castaignos again up front. The club had already announced that the striker would be leaving at the end of the campaign and once again he failed to impress as Vitesse struggled from the start.

On 25 minutes, Roda JC got the first chance of the game and took it with Dani Schahin heading in a cross by Jannes Vansteenkiste. Donis Avdijaj missed a great chance to make it 2-0 before the break, while at the other end, Mason Mount fired over with Vitesse’s only real opportunity.

In the second half, Matavz came on for Castaignos, but it did not inspire a comeback for the hosts as Avdijaj doubled Roda JC’s lead on 70 minutes after a fine pass by Simon Gustafson. Ten minutes later, Schahin netted his second to complete the comfortable win for Roda JC.

The victory means Roda JC are now 16th and four points from safety. Importantly, they move four points above FC Twente, who sit bottom. Vitesse remain 7th.
